Shawn Dorius publishes research in the Journal of Contemporary China

Shawn Dorius, associate professor of sociology, published a study titled “In the Eyes of the Beholder: How China and the U.S. See Each Other” in the Journal of Contemporary China.

Using data obtained from nationally representative, cross-nationally comparable public opinion surveys conducted in the US and China in 2015, we compare the attitudes of Chinese citizens toward the US with those of American citizens toward China. Our results suggest that Chinese citizens hold more favorable attitudes toward the US than do Americans toward China. Respondents in China and the US differ on what issues they believe to be most important, with Chinese respondents placing greater importance on issues of sovereignty and territorial disputes, while US respondents giving greater attention to universal values such as human rights and environmental degradation.
