Matthew DeLisi named Distinguished Professor

Matthew DeLisi, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean’s Professor, has been awarded the title of Iowa State University Distinguished Professor.

A Distinguished Professorship is awarded for exemplary performance in research and/or creative activities as reflected by a national or international reputation in the nominee’s discipline. Awardees receive a permanent increase in their salary and retain the Distinguished Professor title for the remainder of their careers at Iowa State.

Those named a Distinguished Professor must have accomplishments in research, and/or creative activities that have had a significant impact on, or improved the quality of, their discipline. In addition, a Distinguished Professor must have demonstrated outstanding performance in at least one other area of faculty responsibility: teaching and advising, extension/professional practice or institutional service.

A renowned scholar, DeLisi is one of the most influential and prolific criminologists in the world with over 400 scholarly publications on an array of topics in the social, behavioral and forensic sciences. He has also published 30 books.  In 2012, DeLisi received the prestigious Fellow Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for distinguished teaching and research achievement. In 2019, DeLisi earned the prestigious Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science for sustained and outstanding distinguished contributions to psychological science. He is the only scientist in the world who is a Fellow of both organizations.

He has been involved in several academic organizations including the International Association for Correctional and Forensic Psychology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, Association for Psychological Science, and Biosocial Criminology Association among others. Since 2017, DeLisi has also been Visiting Professor at the University of Huddersfield in the United Kingdom where he serves as Chair of the International Advisor Group for the None-in-Three Project, a multi-nation, multi-disciplinary, large-scale (£ millions) funded initiative to reduce gender-based violence.

DeLisi will be honored with the other 2020 university award winners at the annual awards ceremony this fall.
